How Patient Education Can Help Build Empathy in Health Care

by

What makes a good doctor? In a poll by Dr. Ashish Jha of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, “empathy” was the most popular answer (18%), followed by “good listener” (14%) and “compassionate/caring/kind” (13%). Empathy is critical when communicating with patients – in fact numerous studies have shown that effective communication between health care providers and patients can boost patient satisfaction, adherence to medications, and lead to fewer malpractice cases.

Want to build empathy in your practice, but don’t know where to start? We’ve got you covered. This month, our latest videos show patients you care and understand their concerns.

Make positive change

Change is hard. When you ask your patients to quit smoking or start exercising, at first they might be overwhelmed. Why not send them an encouraging message for inspiration? With the new, “It’s Never Too Late” vignette, your patients will get ideas for how to start making positive changes, today.
